For someone who has everything, the photo does the work. Three directions:

Candid beats posed. When the face takes up more than half the frame it lands around 12 studs across, and the crease at the corner of a smile survives. Shot from far away, the bricks go to the background and the person disappears.

Fur is where brick shines. Light and dark strands separate into three or four levels across roughly 40 shades, and an eye only needs about 4 studs to hold its look. One animal at a time - two in one frame fight for the same studs.

Sky and water are wide gradients, and 50 by 50 renders them beautifully. There is no face to protect here, so all 2,500 bricks go into the colour steps - and a landscape never feels too sentimental for a friend.

Thirty, forty, fifty and sixty are the years people expect something with thought behind it. An ordinary birthday can take an ordinary present. A milestone one tends to be remembered by what it was marked with.
A piece that needs assembly is a strange thing to unwrap at a restaurant. If the party is out somewhere, hand it over separately or send it ahead so it arrives at their home.
Portraits of the recipient can feel like a lot coming from a colleague or a newer friend. A pet or a shared place carries the same effort without the intensity.
Birthdays are fixed a year in advance, so there is no excuse for a rush order and no prize for arriving on the morning. Aim for 3 or 4 days early.

Usually yes. What matters is a large subject and a quiet background. A phone close-up beats a professional wide shot every time here.
